EAL Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Electrical Energy Storage Systems

This qualification has been awarded the Electrician Plus kitemark.

These qualifications in relevant low carbon technologies with appropriate pre-requisites reflect ‘Electrician Plus’ principles and are operating in full compliance with the industry assessment strategy and have been reviewed in detail by the ECS technical approval group.

Course details

This qualification covers the knowledge, understanding and some of the skills associated with the design, specification, installation, inspection, testing, commissioning and handover of electrical energy storage systems (EESS). It follows the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems and industry guidance, together with the requirements of BS 7671. 

It is aimed at competent electricians who wish to demonstrate they have the necessary understanding and skills associated with installing an EESS, typically with a dwelling. 

It has a range of relevant outcomes covering statutory legislation applicable to EESS, the principles of batteries and EESS, how to specify and design an EESS, installation, inspection, testing, commissioning and handover of an EESS. 

It is recognised by MCS. MCS create and maintain standards that allows for the certification of products, installers and their installations. MCS certifies low-carbon products and installations used to produce electricity and heat from renewable sources. MCS is a mark of quality. Membership of MCS demonstrates adherence to these recognised industry standards; highlighting quality, competency and compliance. 

The qualification was developed with help from renewable industry experts including contractors, battery manufacturers, centres and the ECA. 

Entry requirements

To be eligible for registration on this qualification, learners must hold one of the following:
• A qualification underpinning core technical competence for work in dwellings from Table A4.7 of the EAS Qualifications Guide or
• A qualification underpinning core technical competence from Table A4.8 of the EAS Qualifications Guide or

• A current ECS Gold Card as a Domestic Electrician, JIB Electrician, or Approved Electrician.
