This qualification forms part of an industry-recognised route for learners to become occupationally competent, qualified electricians. It is also used as part of the electrical apprenticeship in England and Northern Ireland. It covers the skills and knowledge needed by an electrician (installation or maintenance). To demonstrate occupational competence, the learner must also complete the AM2S/P.
This qualification will allow you to work as a fully qualified electrician in domestic, industrial or commercial properties. There are also options to further your learning upon completing the course and when you have gained further experience.
The candidate will attend 30 Monday evenings in year one and 30 Monday evenings in year two to complete the knowledge element of the qualification.
The qualifications performance (NVQ) element can be completed over the following 9-24 months through assessments in the workplace, the time frame will depend on experience and readiness for assessment.
Candidates must complete the knowledge and performance units to achieve the full award and become fully qualified. The candidate must be employed in the electrical industry to complete the NVQ. The candidate must complete the AM2 end test to achieve Gold Card status.
The learner will study nine knowledge units (see delivery plan below). The units are assessed through an online multiple-choice examination, written assignments, and practical skills assessments.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements for this qualification. However, we must ensure that learners have the potential to achieve the qualification and are working at Level 2 in literacy and numeracy, so that they can complete the learning outcomes and assessments.
Candidates must have employment in the industrial/commercial electrical industry to complete the NVQ section of this qualification. It is anticipated that our candidates should be gaining experience on-site whilst completing the knowledge requirements.
Course content
This qualification comprises knowledge and performance units, which, together, cover health, safety, and environmental considerations; organising and overseeing; terminating and connecting; inspection, testing, and commissioning; fault diagnosis and rectification; electrical scientific principles; BS 7671; electrical design; and electrical maintenance.
It requires occupational evidence from the workplace to complete the portfolio section.
Course length
It is expected that evidence for the performance units in this qualification will be gathered over time, as learners develop proficiency. As such, this qualification normally requires a minimum of 24 months to complete. Learners completing in less than this normal minimum duration are expected to be the exception and will be subject to enhanced checks at AM2 gateway.

Purpose of the qualification
To demonstrate occupational competence, learners must also complete the integrated Electrotechnical Occupational Competence Unit, which is assessed by the National Electrotechnical Training Ltd (NET) AM2P/S.

What does this qualification cover?
This qualification comprises of the skills and knowledge required to install electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures, and the environment. The qualification is made up of knowledge units and performance units.
The units cover a wide range of topics, including environmental technology systems, overseeing and organising the work environment, planning, preparing and installing electrical systems and equipment, cables and flexible cords, inspecting, testing, commissioning, and fault diagnosis and correction.

Once knowledge units are completed, a portfolio of workplace evidence must also be submitted.
An example of a typical assessment plan that a candidate may undertake to complete the NVQ performance units:

All portfolio assessments are undertaken in the workplace.

Course cost
The cost for delivery of the course is £8300 +VAT for knowledge units, 18th edition, and NVQ portfolio.
The knowledge units of the course are delivered over 2 years on Monday evenings, starting September 2026. The portfolio must be completed in the workplace and usually takes 6-18 months.
The AM2 is an additional compulsory end point assessment that must be completed for the full certificate to be achieved; costs are set by NET and are subject to change.
