AM2 top tips

  1. Identify your AM2 type

For Installation & Maintenance Electrician, aside from the AM2, which excludes containment, these AM2 versions have been developed so everyone is being assessed to the same technical standard.

  2. Understand the journey

To help you understand what happens at each step of the AM2 process, take a look at the journey below, which takes you from the very first step – being approved to sit the assessment – through to gaining your certificate once you pass.

  3. Preparation, preparation, preparation.

NET’s AM2 Pre-Assessment Manual will help you to prepare for your upcoming assessment. In the manual, you’ll be able to read:

    • Details on each section of the assessment

    • Common areas – where candidates fail and how to address this

    • General hints and tips for success

During your AM2, AM2S or AM2E assessment, you’ll need to correctly complete an Electrical Installation Certificate, Schedule of Circuit Details and Schedule of Test Results using the documentation provided by your assessor.

To help familiarise yourself with these documents, you can download NET’s blank template forms, which show the layout and format of the forms used during the assessment.

Preparation is essential—plan ahead and familiarise yourself with the paperwork to ensure a smooth, stress-free assessment.

  1. Know what to expect

We recommend attending an AM2 Preparation Day to fully prepare yourself for what to expect on the day. This isn't a revision session, but a day of pre-exam support.

Where is the centre? It sounds obvious, but know where you're going, how long it will take you to get there, and where to park. You don't want extra stress on your assessment day because you couldn't find the carpark. Ashton AM2 Centre is located at Suite 7, St Michaels Court, St Michaels Square, Ashton under Lyne, OL6 6XN.

There is a cobbled car park in front of the building, but this is private.

The nearest parking would be on St Michael's Church Carpark (https://maps.app.goo.gl/XWDMPMxLSiwRKhpN9) it is pay on app when you arrive, so you will need to download the Evology Parking app.

Please do not use the Church Street car park if you are in a van. Vans are targeted in the car park, whether they are sign-written or not. If you need to come in a van please ensure it is empty of all tools and use the Old Cross Street/Swan Street car park instead. This is a council-run pay and display car park less than a 5-minute walk from the centre. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/BujEi6Bf6yFoh4jT6)

What do I need to bring to my assessment?

Photo ID- We understand that the first morning of your assessment will be stressful, but don't make it more stressful by having to go back home to get your ID!

On the day of the assessment candidates will need to bring with them a photographic form of identification, which is current or within expiry date. Without photographic ID, candidates will not be permitted to take the assessment.

Acceptable forms of identification: Passport, Driving Licence, ECS Card. Workwear- For the AM2/AM2s Assessment, you must dress in suitable, safe working clothing and wear appropriate footwear, as the test is conducted in a workshop environment. The focus is on professional, practical attire suitable for electrical installation work. Safety boots/shoes must be worn at all times, and you should arrive dressed in suitable, comfortable work clothes.

What don't I need to bring? Books- The following publications will be available on the day of your assessment and will be supplied by the assessment centre.

    • BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations

    • Onsite Guide

    • Guidance Notes 3, Inspection & Testing

    • IET Electricians Guide to the Building Regs

Candidates are not permitted to bring their own materials to the Assessment Centre. Tools- You don't have to, but you are permitted to use your own insulated side cutters, wire strippers and pliers only, providing they are in a safe and serviceable condition (i.e. insulation undamaged). NET recommends they are insulated to the BS EN IEC 60900 standard. Your assessor may refuse personal tools if they are unsafe to use.

These tools will still be available from the assessment centre for you to use if you prefer. All other tools outside of these three items will be supplied by the centre and must be used. Any personal tools will be photographed by the assessor and added to your assessment record.
