AM2E Supplementary Units

5 min read

If you are completing the Experienced Worker Assessment and have already passed the AM2, you will only have to undertake a supplementary AM2E unit rather than the whole assessment.

Before you can book this unit with a NET centre, NET must verify your existing AM2 status.

You will not be able to carry out this process until you have your Experienced Worker Qualification certificate. This needs to be uploaded as part of the application process.

The documents you need are dependent on when you registered on the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA):

Registered on the EWA before September 2023:

  1. A copy of your Experienced Worker Qualification certificate – the certificate must state ‘Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification’ and the qualification code which is either 2346 (City & Guilds) or 603/5982/1 (EAL). No other certificates will be accepted. When uploading an EAL certificate we require both parts (2 pages) of the document to be supplied.

  2. Your Candidate Learner History – this is available from EAL or City & Guilds to confirm your qualification registration and certification dates. A PDF copy is required.

  3. Your AM2 certificate

  4. Your completed AM2E Supplementary Unit Checklist

  5. Paperwork around any reasonable adjustments if you require them.

  • After April 2010: Containment and Safe Isolation unit – AM2EU1

AM2 passed Pre-April 2010: Testing & Safe Isolation Unit - AM2EU2

For this unit, you’ll need to carry out three safe isolation tasks and then carry out a visual inspection of an installation and complete a series of tests following practices and procedures that take into account electrically sensitive equipment.

More information

Maximum Time Allowed:

 – Safe Isolation: 30 minutes plus 5 minutes to read and prepare

– Testing: 3 hours 30 minutes, plus 20 minutes to read and prepare

Safe Isolation Task:

The safe isolation procedure will be observed by the Centre Assessor.

To demonstrate occupational competence, you will have to carry out safe isolation in the correct sequence to allow for the following tasks:

Note: for Tasks 1 & 2 all other circuits must remain energised.

  • Task 1: To replace a single-phase piece of equipment

  • Task 2: To replace a three-phase piece of equipment

  • Task 3: To isolate the distribution board in your fault diagnosis bay.

SAFE ISOLATION PROCEDURE

  1. Identify your point of isolation

  2. Inform the customer that you will be isolating the supply.

  3. Operate the isolator and lock off and fit warning notice

  4. Select approved test equipment and prove that it is working.

  5. Test on the outgoing side of isolator all combinations:

  • Earth fault loop impedance

  • Additional protection (effectiveness of RCDs)

  • Prospective fault current

  • Check of phase sequence

  • Functional testing

You also need to correctly complete an Electrical Installation Certificate, Schedule of Circuit Details and Schedule of Test Results and verify selected results comply with BS 7671, using the documentation provided.
